My family travelled to New York City and then across state to Niagara Falls - this is what we did and what we enjoyed (and didn't!).

New York is a great place to visit but is hardly value for money. Food and drink is expensive and tourist activities soon rack up more dollars especially for a family of 5!

However the Staten Island Ferry is one of the exceptions. Free to go on and it takes you right passed the Statue of Liberty. It rates high in value for money in book! The trip takes about 20-25 mins and if you're not interested in Staten Island (most people it seems are not) you can return immediately on the next ferry.

It may seem mad to simply travel there and back, not stopping on the other side but if you treat this as a free tourist cruise the. It makes perfect sense. Definitely with a shot and don't forget chilli burgers on the way over!
